Experiences

Manager, Tech Lead - Site Reliability Engineering

Capital One | Oct 2021 - Present

I lead and manage a group of SREs consisting of US-based associates and globally distributed contractors, supporting Capital One's Commercial Card Platform. As a hands-on technical leader and people manager, I oversee the team's roadmap, guide technical direction, and mentor each associate's professional development through individualized plans.

  • Instituted formal SRE engagement model with supported groups, eliminating ad-hoc requests and improving operational visibility, planning, and team incident response capabilities.
  • Designed and implemented a realtime rules-based traffic shaping solution for virtual card number generation across multiple providers.
  • Spearheaded the multi-year AWS cost optimization initiative for our 1300-person business tower, built tooling to identify cost savings opportunities across hundreds of AWS accounts.
  • Developed a self-service tool enabling engineers to rapidly scale up downsized, non-production AWS resources after hours, facilitating off-hours work while maintaining cost optimization. This solution has been adopted across multiple lines of business.
  • Oversee the operation and security posture of the Commercial Card Platform's data pipeline infrastructure.
  • Ensure the Commercial Card Platform's ongoing compliance with security and regulatory requirements by actively monitoring and implementing updates based on enterprise bulletins.

DevOps Guy

Lola, Inc. | Sept 2020 - Oct 2021

Managed all aspects of Lola Inc.'s AWS infrastructure, including a dedicated CDE account. My work often focused on Kubernetes, the foundation of the company's technology stack.

  • Operated and maintained existing clusters built with kops.
  • Designed and built out new clusters using EKS, Terraform.
  • Developed and managed CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins on k8s, automating build, test, and deployment processes.
  • Participated in PCI audits, ensuring compliance with security standards.
  • Led operational shutdown and IP asset transfer during startup acquisition by Capital One, ensuring a seamless, compliant migration.

Founder

DataFeast, LLC | Sept 2019 - Present

I founded and develop several SaaS applications focused on analytic insights for team communication. I also consult on full stack development and data engineering solutions.

Director of Engineering

Zoomi, Inc. | Sept 2017 - Sept 2019

As Director of Engineering at Zoomi, I led a 20-person engineering organization encompassing product engineering, DevOps, and SQA. I partnered with research, product, and senior leadership to define and deliver on the company's engineering roadmap and product delivery commitments. My contributions included:

  • Established company-wide best practices for code review, deployment, and access control to improve code quality, deployment reliability, and security posture.
  • Collaborated with DevOps and SQA to design and implement robust production deployment, testing, and rollback procedures, minimizing deployment risk and ensuring service stability.
  • Partnered with the head of Advanced Research to create a standard library that effectively decoupled algorithmic implementations from product code, enhancing code maintainability and flexibility.
  • Formalized incident response and escalation procedures to ensure efficient handling of production issues and minimize service disruptions.
  • Mandated operational playbooks and application telemetry as prerequisites for new service deployments, improving operational visibility and maintainability.
  • Optimized compute platforms scaling, reducing AWS spend by 40%

Lead Software Engineer

Zoomi, Inc. | Jan 2017 - Sept 2017

As Lead Software Engineer at Zoomi, I hired and led the engineering team responsible for the company's core data ingestion pipeline and customer-facing APIs.

  • Partnered with the VP of Engineering to architect and deliver a complete overhaul of the data pipeline, analytics datastores, and APIs over nine months, positioning the company for future growth.
  • Designed and implemented a novel caching solution during a critical growth period, ensuring continued access to aggregated analytic data for Zoomi's largest customers.
  • Promoted to Director of Engineering following the successful completion of the platform modernization initiative.

Senior Software Engineer

Dyn Inc. (Oracle) | Apr 2013 - Jan 2017

At Dyn Inc., I played a key role in scaling the Email Delivery IaaS platform from 400 million to over 5 billion emails processed, delivered, and tracked per month, while simultaneously expanding the platform's feature set. For 18 months prior to the acquisition by Oracle in 2016, I led the team focused on scaling the reporting database schemas and infrastructure, inbound data processing, and reporting APIs.

  • Developed a reactive, dynamically weighted load-balancing service for SMTP ingress to improve platform stability during ingestion spikes
  • Created a high-performance HTTP reverse proxy with real-time traffic control and per-customer metrics using OpenResty & Redis, enhancing visibility & API stability.
  • Created a distributed SMTP load and stress testing framework to quantify the performance impact of changes to the ingestion, queueing and ETL platform functions.
  • Designed the denormalized reporting and analytics table schemas, indexes, partition schemes and partition management automation to support product scaling targets.
  • Sharded the customer reporting data and created automations and tooling for cluster topology management and shard rebalancing using MySQL Fabric, Vitess.
  • Migrated accounting, billing, and topology management data infrastructure to multi-region-multi-writer using Percona XtraDB Cluster.
  • Designed and led implementation of a new common data access layer for the next-gen database infrastructure.

Senior Programmer II

GEICO | Jan 2008 - Apr 2013

As a Senior Programmer II at GEICO, I was a core contributor to, and for three years the technical owner of, geico.com's static web framework

  • Developed A/B/n testing and customization framework, integrating with GEICO's in-house and 3rd party analytics platforms.
  • Developed a custom in-house CMS to manage GEICO's website, web portals and communities, adaptive to the complexities of our unique operating environment.
  • Managed build automation, code promotion, and staging/integration environments as the team's release engineer, collaborating effectively with Operations and Networking groups.
  • Played a key role as one of three developers responsible for building the first iteration of the GEICO iOS application (2009).
